Florida Businesses Compensated from the $20 Billion Fund for BP Oil Spill Victims

After three long months of marine oil spillage, the Deepwater Horizon well was finally declared, "effectively dead" on September 19, 2010. Spilling approximately 53,000 barrels of oil per day, there was a total estimate of 4.9 million barrels spilled when everything was said and done. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill is ultimately the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. As of April of 2012, it was found that oil had infiltrated over 200 miles of Louisiana's coastline.

The White House oil spill commission officially blamed BP (British Petroleum) for the oil spill incident and they ultimately accepted full responsibility. It was concluded that the Deepwater Horizon spill was not an isolated incident and it could be correlated to BP's decision to cut costs and lack of overall well safety. Due to the widespread damage to the marine wildlife habitat and the economic losses that Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida have suffered, BP decided to set up a $20 billion fund in order to compensate the oil spill victims who were affected financially.

As of July 2011, there had already been $4.7 billion paid out from the fund- overall in 2011 there were nearly 1 million BP oil spill claims made. That is where we come in.
