Fort Myers Pradaxa Lawyer

Looking for a lawyer for a Pradaxa injury case in Fort Myers, FL?

Among medical professionals worldwide, the use of Pradaxa is becoming more and more widely utilized for the treatment of patients suffering from atrial fibrillation, as well as those who present risk factors of stroke. Acting as an oral anticoagulant, the blood thinner is used to prevent the formation of blood clots and treat other similar symptoms. Primarily, Pradaxa is used as an alternative form of medication for the more standardized use of warfarin.

The Risk of Internal Bleeding

For some, the use of Pradaxa has presented overwhelmingly positive effects; however, it is still used only an alternative to the preferred blood thinner, warfarin, and a closer look at the drug easily explains why. Currently, a specific way to reverse the anticoagulant effects of Pradaxa in cases of major bleeding does not exist.

This is a problem that has become increasingly more present as more and more patients are being prescribed the medication. Patients over the age of 75 are particularly at risk, because higher rates of GI bleeding have been found among users of Pradaxa in this age group; however, people of all ages are at risk when taking the Pradaxa drug.

Studies indicate that more than one in ten patients experience bleeding as a side effect of taking the prescription medication. Of particular concern is the internal bleeding that can result from the use of Pradaxa.

Serious internal bleeding and / or hemorrhaging have been suffered by Pradaxa users whose symptoms were not diagnosed earlier enough in their treatment – an error that can often be fatal. It is this type of oversight that makes use of the drug that much more dangerous. If your medical condition has worsened as a result of using Pradaxa, we encourage you to immediately contact your doctor. You could be suffering from the side effects of one of the drug's many risks.

Many doctors are inclined to prescribe Pradaxa to their patients because the drug does not tout the same side effects as its counterpart, warfarin. Specifically, the use of Pradaxa does not generally cause an adverse reaction to most types of food.

This, however, does not temper the fact that no antidote currently exists for the effects of Pradaxa, specifically those of internal bleeding or hemorrhaging. As a result, bleeding in Pradaxa users is often much more deadly than bleeding among patients who are taking warfarin.

Although Pradaxa was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010, the manufacturer of the drug, Boehringer Ingelheim, has since revealed that hundreds of deaths have resulted from use of the medication.

These deaths, which were recorded between March 2008 and October 2011, were the results of severe internal bleeding that could not be stopped once it began. As recently as January 2012, the FDA mandated that precautionary changes to the drug's labeling be made to acknowledge this risk factor. Unfortunately, this action was too little too late for the many users who have already suffered.
